Cinderella Film Review.

Kenneth Branagh tackles the classic fairy tale of Cinderella with plenty of style but it does leave a little to be desired.  Lily James plays Cinders wonderfully. Capturing the heart and soul of the down trodden but ever hopeful Disney “Princess” bringing with her a tenderness and beauty of the purest kind. For Cinderella purists you have the common beats of doomed parents, ugly step-sisters, cute animals, glass slippers and a fairy godmother. Lest we forget an evil stepmother who’s brought to life through Cate Blanchett bringing repugnance to this conniving woman that you will love to loathe. Richard Madden carries the handsome and charming Prince well but thankfully Branagh almost always keeps the camera on James’ Cinderella as she refuses to kneel in the face of adversity.

Comparisons will  be made to the only true other Cinderella movie in Disney’s 1950 animated original. This new live-action remake looks every bit the counter-part to the cartoon, dashing the screen in colour and vibrancy.  Outfits are gloriously enchanting, sets both realised and magical with the whole design befitting to the classic.  Unfortunately something is lost in translation. This re-telling doesn’t quite have the big heart of the original nor does it quite match the more recent efforts from Disney that keep adults as entranced as the children. You could do a lot worse than this in the way of a family film though as it’s a faithful homage to a tale that teaches us to “have courage and be kind”. A lesson we would all do well to remember.

  1. good review.. pretty much how I felt.. I was surprised at how much I did like it considering I went in with very low expectations.. it wasn’t the worst I thought it was going to be..but it wasn’t the classic either.. 🙂

    1. Thanks Peggy I appreciate, as ever your kind words. Sorry it takes me so long to reply I’m not on here much recently. I’ve just reviewed Avengers 2 so check it out! We’ve had it a week before the states luckily!
